The historical village of Mayerling has 600 inhabitants and belongs to the municipality of the Lower Austrian town Alland.
Mayerling is world famous for the tragedy of crown prince Rudolf and his lover Mary Vetsera. On the 30th January 1889 Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria, only son of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria and Empress Elisabeth and heir to the Austro-Hungarian crown, was found dead with his mistress Baroness Mary Vetsera, apparently as a result of suicide. Rudolf shot Mary with a revolver and afterwards commited suicide. Crown prince Rudolf was married to the Belgian princess Stephanie, who was the oldest daughter of King Leopold II from Belgium. Some years later she married to a Hungarian baron. She died very old in the year 1945, when she tried to escpae from the Russian army.
Mayerling is located in the east of Lower Austria.
