Gmünd is located in the north of Lower Austria, directly on the border to Czech Republic.
The town has 6.100 inhabitants and was divided into two parts after the first world war. The migration of a lot of Czech workers for the railway, made the Northern parts of Gmünd to Czech speaking areas. After the first world war and the independence of Czech nation, the Czech parts of Gmünd were taken by the Czechs to their new nation.
