Hohenau is a town with 2.800 inhabitants in the Norh Eastern corner of Lower Austria, directly next to the Slovak border.
The most important economical sector in Hohenau was the sugar factory which belonged to the Agrana concern. The sugar factory was founded in 1867 and closed in 2006, because of the bad situation for sugar on the world market. A lot of the citizens in Hohenau lost their jobs. This is extra hard, because there are not much other jobs available in the area of Hohenau.
The sugar factory left a pond of cooling water for the sugar production, which does not freeze up during winter. This pond is very popular among thousands of ducks and wild gooses for a stop on their flight to the south. In the last years a real birds paradise developed. As the sugar factory closed this year, the pond and the birds paradise is endangered now.
