Petronell Carnuntum

Filed under: Lower Austria — admin @ 7:47 pm

Petronell Carnuntum is a village in the east of Lower Austria, close to the Danube river.

When Austria was a part of the Roman Empire, Petronell-Carnuntum was an important place of its Eastern province Pannonia.

The most important sights of Petronell-Carnuntum are the remains of the Roman fortress Carnuntum.

Another impressive sight and the symbol of Petronell-Carnuntum is the Heidentor, translated into the English language it means “the gate of the pagans” or “pagan gate”. The pagan gate had four gateways and a height of 20 metres. Patronell-Carnuntums impressive sight was built under the reign of Emperor Constantin II (337 – 361), and had to be the symbol of a victory of an important battle during those Roman times. The gate was renovated from 1840 to 1850. In 1907 the historic building was renovated again by the federal government of Lower Austria.
