Knittelfeld is located in the Central part of Styria.
The town was always forced to compete its neighbour cities Judenburg and Leoben. Judenburg was prefered by Italian merchants, and Leoben was favoured by the iron trade. For a long time Knittelfeld was not able to step out of the shadows of those two cities.
At the end of the second world war Knittelfeld was totally destroyed by air raids.
The railway always was, and still is, the most important employer of the town.
Knittelfeld has 13.000 inhabitants.
